I'm a qualified optometrist specialising in domiciliary eye care across Essex. I believe everyone deserves access to high-quality eye care, regardless of their ability to visit a high-street practice.

With years of experience in both practice-based and home-visit optometry, I understand the unique needs of housebound patients and care home residents. My approach is patient, thorough, and always focused on your comfort and wellbeing.

I bring all the latest portable equipment to ensure you receive the same standard of care you'd expect in any modern optometry practice — just without the need to travel.

What Our Patients Say

We're proud of the care we provide. Here's what some of our patients and their families have to say.

Nicholas was so patient with my mother who has dementia. He explained everything clearly and took his time. We hadn't been able to get her to a high street optician for years — this service is a lifeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our home eye test service.

Who qualifies for a free NHS home eye test?

You qualify if you're aged 60 or over and cannot leave home unaccompanied due to a physical or mental health condition. Care home residents, people registered blind or partially sighted, those with diabetes or glaucoma, and people on certain benefits (Income Support, Universal Credit, Pension Credit) also qualify. If you're unsure, just call us — we'll check for you.

How much does a private home eye test cost?

Most of our patients qualify for a completely free NHS-funded eye test. For those who don't qualify for NHS funding, private home eye tests are available from £60. We'll always check your eligibility first — you may be surprised to find you qualify at no cost.

What happens during a home eye test?

We bring all portable equipment to your home. The appointment takes 30–45 minutes and includes a full eye health check, vision assessment, eye pressure test, and retinal examination. We use the same clinical standards as any high-street practice. If glasses are needed, we'll help you choose frames from our range there and then.

Can I book for my elderly parent or relative?

Absolutely — many of our bookings come from family members concerned about a parent's vision. You can call or fill in our form on their behalf. No GP referral is needed. You don't need to be present during the appointment, but you're welcome to be there if you'd like. We'll keep you updated on results and any recommendations.

What areas in Essex do you cover?

We cover Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree, Witham, Maldon, Tiptree, Halstead, Sudbury, Clacton, Southend, Basildon, Brentwood and all surrounding villages. If you're unsure whether we cover your area, just ask — we're expanding all the time and can often accommodate requests outside our usual radius.

Do you provide eye care for care homes?

Yes, we partner with care homes across Essex providing regular scheduled visits. All care home residents qualify for free NHS-funded eye tests regardless of age. We provide comprehensive documentation to support CQC compliance and work around your home's daily routines. Contact us to discuss a partnership.

How quickly can you visit?

We typically offer same-week appointments, and can often accommodate next-day visits for urgent cases. When you call, we'll find the earliest slot that suits you. We offer flexible morning and afternoon appointments Monday to Friday, with Saturday visits available by arrangement.

Is the service suitable for people with dementia?

Yes — we specialise in dementia-friendly eye care. Nicholas has extensive experience working with patients who have dementia or cognitive difficulties. We take a patient, unhurried approach, explain everything simply, and adapt our examination technique to ensure comfort. We can also liaise with carers or family members about the results.
